Field trip: The Cabrillo Aquarium

Location: 600 Sampson Way, San Pedro, CA 90731
Website: https://theecologycenter.org/
Type of trip: educational, STEM

We love the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, and someday there will be a separate post on all its wonder. But, in so many ways, I prefer the hands-on nature of the smaller, cheaper, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.

You can do this aquarium in a few hours and see everything, but you probably will end up staying longer if your kids fall in love with the Exploration Center like mine do!

Kids can use the microscopes to view fish scales, shark teeth, and hundreds of shells. Bonus: the center provides step stools so your little one can do it herself!

The highlights are a walk through fish tank, a worm tunnel, and dozens of microscope slides, touch and explore shelves, magnatite play sand, and truly an endless list of discoveries.

My favorite part about the Exploration Center is the staff! They’re encourage our children so much, field the many (many many) questions with kindness, and do more than just “state the rules” like staff does at so many locations. They truly want to interact with – not just educate – your children.

You’ll want to visit the gift shop! Their selection of educational posters, guides, and great books make a great addition to your homeschool.

Note: I leave my children’s faces out of photos in an effort to protect their privacy since they are too young to consent to these shares. I do my best to always eliminate their faces throughout my website.
